Heating accounts for nearly two-thirds of a home’s energy consumption. For greater comfort and to reduce your bills, insulation is a priority. Several solutions are available depending on your budget.
3 things to remember for successful insulation
Check that ventilation is sufficiently efficient
It is important that a home be properly ventilated, particularly to evacuate moisture. Indeed, the air in the home contains water vapor from its occupants and their activities.
To limit humidity in the home, insulation must always be combined with effective ventilation, controlled or mechanically assisted: humidity-controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV), dual flow, etc.
Ensure airtightness is good
Insulating walls without hunting down unwanted air inlets is a waste of money: they can significantly increase heating bills, be a source of discomfort and call into question the usefulness of the insulation work and the proper functioning of the ventilation.
Remove all thermal bridges
They are located:
- at the junctions between the roof and the walls;
- between the walls and the window frames;
- between floors and walls;
- at the junction of the balcony and the wall;
- at the level of the uprights of the frames, the rafters, the fixing points, etc.
These are weak areas in a building’s envelope: the cold from outside is then transmitted more quickly to the interior of the home. Water vapor condenses on these colder points, which can lead to the formation of black marks and mold.
Good continuity of the insulation and the waterproofing membrane should make it possible to address these weak points.
